First Gestational Diabetes experience to share with you

As a diabetes educator, I know other women’s experience will help you relate to the physical and emotional issues associated with gestational diabetes and know that you are not alone!

Skye, one of my girl friends, has kindly wrote her experience for me to share with you so you can understand what could happen with gestational diabetes! She has done very well with lifestyle modification throughout her pregnancies. She has managed the four times daily blood glucose monitoring and changed her dietary habits. Good managements during her pregnancies have seen both her and her daughters safely through her pregnancies.  She is doing the right thing by keeping an eye on her carbohydrate intake as the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is greater for her. She rides bikes and walks with her family regularly which are great ways to keep her physically active!  Thank you, Skye!

In both of my pregnancies I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

In my first pregnancy gestational diabetes was not detected until quite late in my pregnancy, however this was quite a mild case and seemed to resolve it self without any insulin dependency.

My sugar levels seemed to be up and down for a while after my daughter was born although my baby was born without  symptoms or side effects of gestational diabetes.

My second daughter was born 12 years later.

And my gestational diabetes was detected earlier on in my second trimester.

I was referred to a diabetes educator where I was out on a low carbohydrate eating plan which I adhered to.

Part of my management was to test my sugar levels 4 times a day- 2 hours before and 2 hours after meals. The results from these testings were logged into a diabetes log book. Once again I did not need the assistance of insulin injection.

My levels remained under 5.0 and with a low carbohydrate food intake and plenty of exercise my levels remained at a good level.

My sugar levels after my second pregnancy once again resolved itself , however I still do hav to be careful with carbohydrate intake as I am sensitive to the metabolism of such.

Both my children are not affected by my having gestational diabetes and they have no symptoms or problems with diabetes.
