How to engage and support people with diabetes in community pharmacies?

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to share my messages in the Chempro Chemist Conference in beautiful Gold Coast on 27th February 2018. I’ve encouraged all pharmacists to collaborate with the patients’ doctors and allied health professionals with individualised plans for each patient!

I’ve also invited all pharmacists to join me to raise awareness of diabetes and to reduce social stigma about diabetes. I’ve also discussed how community pharmacists can engage with their patients by simply asking how they are going and REALLY LISTEN  to UNDERSTAND what they are going through and what they need. Only then can the pharmacists offer heart felt support and quality services to help with diabetes management and to help patients achieve better health outcomes.

I’ve also recommended that community pharmacists let their patients know about NDSS and Diabetes QLD, a non-profit organisation doing excellent work to support people with diabetes here in Queensland.

Mehdi, a former hospital pharmacist, from Meriton Sundale Chempro Chemist, is an excellent role model. He provides flu vaccinations in addition to many services to his patients and gives thorough counselling on all medications with clinical focus. His patients know that they can count on him to take really good care of them.

Marc from Surfers Renaissance Chempro Chemist and Southport Chempro Chemist, is another role model. He has started Chevron Renaissance Health Walk with Wade, a passionate physiotherapist, from Central Physio & Health – Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre and myself last October. It’s already been 6 months. Everyone has a great time on the walk with sea breeze on our face and the calming sound of waves in our ears. We meet at 6:15am every Wednesday morning to walk along beautiful Surfers Paradise beach. What better way to start your morning? What’s better than to lead by example? Come and join us on Wednesdays! We look forward to see you there.
