Many thanks to Dawn (a self-proclaimed “scale addict” who used to weigh herself TWICE everyday!) for sharing her experience! We’ve managed to dissolve emotional eating and pull out her “sweet tooth” without dieting or excessive exercise or checking the scale! No pain no gain is just a big myth in my experience with many patients! Also a big thank you to her husband, John, for helping to hide the scale so she’s unable to weigh herself since we first started! Even her GP has come on board to help and won’t let her see the number on the scale in the medical centre!
We don’t know how many “kilo” she has “lost” but we know she has to buy new pants and take in all her current clothes as they are too big now! She can wear some of her old clothes that she’s not worn for years! How good does that feel? I don’t like the word “lose” so I ban all my patients from using it while in my clinics. Some of my patients will tell you that I’m bossy on banning some words when they are with me! No exception!
The bonus of this activity is that her blood glucose levels have improved so much that she won’t need to use additional medicine to treat her diabetes. We both have the ambition of improving her health so much that she can race with her grandchildren one day!
I’ve always asked my patients to put away the scale when they come to me for assistance with their weight, either weight reduction or weight gain, as I’ve explained to all that fats are not created equal. The fat around the tummy is the dangerous fat so the ultimate achievement in weight management is to make sure we don’t have too much fat around the tummy! The fat around the bum poses no danger. Jennifer Lopez is famous for her beautiful bum! Hence weighing on a scale doesn’t give us an accurate indication of our progress!
Our core messages are simple! First, BE KIND to yourself is what I’ve always emphasised with my patients, although not all patients agree with me on this. However, I make no apology in asking everyone ” don’t beat yourself up” because it does no good to anyone! Second, I’ve always asked my patients to “TRUST YOURSELF”. Trust me (Viv) if you don’t trust yourself! Things become better when you trust yourself. Lastly, I invite you to join me to see that YOU ARE THE MIRACLE and YOU ARE YOUR OWN BEST DOCTOR!
