Pharmacy Leadership and my Hero: Professor Lisa Nissen

Really loved Professor Nissen’s presentation on Health 5.0 during the Consultant Pharmacists Conference in Brisbane in June 2018. She shared with all of the consultant pharmacists that patient engagement is the blockbuster drug of the century! That totally resonates with my core belief of using COMPASSION to engage and encourage all my patients to allow me into their lives as their health professionals as a Consultant Pharmacist and/or Credentialled Diabetes Educator and/or Weight Management Practitioner! Only after that happened, the patients and I can work together to make shared decisions about their health! This has always been my cornerstone of success in my clinical work over 20 years in Australia.

Professor Nissen is Head of School of Clinical Sciences in Queensland University of Technology. She has worked tirelessly to ensure her team delivers the superb education to the future pharmacists in Queensland. She is ” a dedicated educator who is committed to advancing the profession of pharmacy through the development of graduates who are prepared for the demands of the future health care landscape and who have the capacity to continue to drive the pharmacy profession forward. She believes that this education must be grounded in practice and focused on optimising the expertise pharmacists can bring to the health care team.”

I’ve been very fortunate to have a good chat with her about how pharmacists can help facilitate better services and health outcomes for Australians. She has been very supportive and very encouraging for my passion in helping pharmacists to look after people living with diabetes in the pharmacies. All patients get their glucose lowering medications and NDSS supplies, such as needles or blood glucose strips, for their diabetes management from the pharmacies so it is important to ensure patients get professional advice. There is so much more we can do to make Australia a healthier and happier place where people can really enjoy their lives and live in harmony.
