Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Diabetes Management
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) are university trained allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. Working closely with other allied health and medical professionals, AEP’s ensure a holistic approach to diabetes management.
AEP’s can help prevent pre-diabetes progressing to diabetes, manage diabetes through graded exercise therapy and lifestyle intervention as well as improving your general health and wellbeing. There is evidence that type 2 diabetes is more likely to develop in individuals who are insufficiently active. Exercise training often in combination with other lifestyle strategies has beneficial effects on improving glycaemic control, insulin sensitivity, body composition, cardiovascular risk factor and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fitness
AEP’s can prescribe individualised exercise programs tailored specifically to accommodate co morbidities and complications. Based on evidence it is recommended that patients with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes accumulated 210 mins per week of moderate intensity or 125 mins per week of vigorous intensity physical activity or exercise. It is further recommended that two or more resistance based training sessions per week (2-4 sets of 8-10 repetitions) should be included in the total 210 or 125 mins of moderate or vigorous intensity exercise.
AEP’s provide training in safe manual handling; perform functional assessments; carry out sub maximal and maximal fitness tests; perform body composition and musculoskeletal assessments and provide lifestyle education to help people manage their health conditions.
AEP’s are registered with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and WorkCover and are recognised by most private health insures.
